Well today was meant to be a relaxing day after Melbourne before we started working again on Monday. This was not the case after lunch.
We were tidying up the garden after some hefty winds whilst we were away, just little bits, for example a chair had been blown in the pool! Myles collected some logs from the top of the garden and chopped them ready for the chilly nights ahead. Laura noticed a small mound of soil by the poolside, we investigated and think that they might be termites so they will have to be eradicated soon! It was whilst we were looking Myles heard a small splash and looked around, it was a snake and it had got itself in the pool!
Myles is terrified of snakes, but even so got closer to see what it was, this would determine weather it would be rescued or not.
At first it looked to be a brown snake which would have been killed but closer inspection revealed it was a Red Bellied Black snake, about 2 1/2ft long. This was just as bad as it is a very aggressive snake and is venomous and would not hesitate to have a bite of a human leg.

It was trying to get out of the pool but wasn't managing that well, we knew it had to be destroyed but not sure how. Myles grabbed the pool leaf net which is 15ft long and made a wash of water to sweep the snake into open water then scooped it into the net. Initial idea would be to drown it. So Myles took it under water and held it into the net by dragging it up and down the pool so the snake couldn't swim against the current. We rang Aaron to see what we should do, he said it would take about 10mins to drown unless we shot it. That would have made it easy but we didn't exactly have one to hand. After 30 mins of being under water it was still very much alive. Myles being Myles couldn't make an animal suffer even if it would be deadly if it bit him. Laura got a spade and Myles dragged it into shallow water and trapped it by folding the net over. One clean slice and the snake was then missing a head. Myles then carried it to the national park at the top of the garden, overturned the net and left the snake for the birds. Laura read that a red belly can still bite 2 hours AFTER ITS DEAD!! So we ran away and left nature to do the dirty work for us. The afternoon was spent hiding indoors watching TV!
