Memphis

So we arrived in Memphis hot and a little shaken, it was our turn in the back of the bus! No air con and super bumpy. but at least it was only a short drive today. (3.5 hours)
Lunch done tents up and it's off to Graceland Elvis' home.
It was an audio headset tour that you follow around the house. It was one of the best tours we've done so far it was so interesting to see where he lived all the 60s/70s decor (carpet on the walls and celing a particulcar favourite of ours) All of his records and various outfits from his live tours. After we finished touring his house we snuck into Elvis' plane which was named after his daughter. We didn't have tickets to do this part so followed a big group in and snuck past to have a cheeky look! The plane was pretty good just like any other private jet with gold lined sinks... It was pretty cool and learnt that Elvis didn't like alcohol and drunk a lot of soft drinks, this meant he had 17 different kinds on board! Including an old bottle of Coke and Gatorade they had preserved in his drinks cabinet.
After that it was the end of our tour which meant no more aircon so it was a shortwalk back to the camp site and straight into the pool again. After pool time we were going out for a group meal in Memphis town. All in the van and we're off. We get an hour to have a look around the Main Street. (Beale street) We have a good look around the bars and shops found the local Hard Rock CafĂ© then we saw it..! The Fed Ex Forum! A huge Fed Ex stadium! (For those who don't know since Laura and I met we've been playing the Fed Ex game which is like yellow car but with anything Fed Ex, it started with vans and got bigger. Now were in America it's got INSANE!) so Myles saw it first so he got 1 million points and he's in the lead because he had 5 Fed Ex planes too.
We moved on and headed back to our resteraunt for the evening. B B kings.
We walked in and got I.D'd so no drinking for us tonight. Got our soft drinks as waited for the others to arrive. We got taken to our table which was right next to the stage. All the resteraunts in Beale Street have live Jazz and Blues music every night. We took a look at the Menus as the first band started. This was the best band we heard and it was amazing! It had a female black singer on main vocals and she was brilliant. We were all singing along enjoying the music and it was time to order food. Myles ordered a Hickory Burger which came with onion rings cheese and bacon all smothered in BBQ sauce. I ordered the same but a chicken burger, Josh and Liam ordered the soul platter which came with deep fried pickles catfish and chicken wings. Once all the food arrived it looked great! (Except the deep fried pickles they looked as gross as they sounded!) Our burgers were huge and we started to make our way through them whilst enjoying the music. Half way through it was the end of the first band and it was a little quieter so we could talk to eachother now. We both tried some catfish and oh my it was beautiful! After dinner the second Jazz band started, much more Authentic with saxophone players and instantly this old man was up dancing away. He looked like he was using an invisible Zimmer frame and we enjoyed watching him then he started to head for our table and asked our tour CEO to dance, she jumped up and started dancing with him so a bunch of us went and joined them dancing. After the song finished we went and sat back down. We listened to a few more songs and danced a few more times as well then it was time to head back to camp for bed at about 10.

There's another story to come about our evenings sleep so make sure to check it out in our next post!

This is us 'walking in Memphis!' Literally!

  2. Thanks for the tip on how good Catfish is. I’ve just been to the Ringmer Chipy and ordered some, he looked at me a bit strange but I insisted on Catfish. When I eventually got my battered Catfish and small chips I thought it looked like more like Cod and it certainly tasted like Cod to me! Oh well.
Glad you are still enjoying it although sorry to hear you have no air con in the coach, that doesn’t sound like much fun..
